The research centers of our departments conduct cutting-edge research. Find below an overview of the main research centers in each of our four departments.
DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
The Zurich Center for Neuroeconomics (ZNE) is a research center including a graduate school funded through generous support by Branco Weiss, the NOMIS Foundation, the Marlene Porsche Foundation, the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital Zurich.
The Zurich Center for Economic Development aims to create synergistic cooperation between academia, business, government and non-profit organizations in developed and in developing countries for the purpose of designing and evaluating economic policies that facilitate the alleviation of poverty and help build prosperity.
The Kühne Center for Sustainable Trade and Logistics is a research center based on a long-term cooperation between the Kühne Foundation and the University of Zurich. It aims to establish itself as a thought leader on issues surrounding economic globalization – by conducting relevant research and making its insights available to a broad audience. Within the framework of this support, the freedom of teaching and research at the University of Zurich remains fully guaranteed.
The goal of the Zurich Center for Market Design is to bring together researchers from different disciplines who are interested in market design, to coordinate fundraising activities, and to make our various market design activities more visible within the university and to the public.
The Center for Child Well-being and Development is a research center at the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich. It was created in 2016 with the goal of significantly improving the situation of children and youth in developing countries using economic knowledge and innovative technology. The center’s main objective is to conduct multidisciplinary high-quality research in the field of development economics, in order to inform policy makers and multilateral organizations about concrete measures and programs that improve child and youth welfare and development.
The Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation (LRF) Center for Economics of Breastfeeding focuses on the economics of child and youth development with a focus on breastfeeding. The research from the center offers policy-makers and public health organizations empirical evidence for designing policies and programs to improve child and youth development.
The Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems research (SNS Lab) is the heart of the ZNE. In this interdisciplinary laboratory researchers explore the biological and neural mechanisms that underlie decision making. They combine cutting-edge brain imaging technologies with non-invasive brain stimulation, neuropharmacology, and computational modeling.

The Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioral Economics provides an excellent infrastructure for conducting experimental research. Current research performed at the laboratory comprises a wide range of topics, including behavioral economics, fairness and reciprocity, team decision-making, neuroeconomics, pharmacological studies, genetic studies, auctions and markets, labor and health economics, and organizational design.
DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
The «Swiss Leading House VPET-ECON: A Research Center on the Economics of Education, Firm Behavior and Training Policies» is a joint project under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Uschi Backes-Gellner (University of Zurich) and Prof. Dr. Stefan C. Wolter (University of Bern) funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). Through the new «Leading House VPET-ECON», the SERI expands the previous Leading House «Economics of Education, Firm Behaviour and Training Policies» and supports the long-term development of Swiss research on vocational and professional education and training (VPET) and the promotion of young researchers in the field.
DEPARTMENT OF BANKING AND FINANCE
The Center for Finance and Insurance (CFI) aims to advance research and foster education in the application of Finance Theory and Mathematical Finance to insurance related topics. The CFI thus strives to build a bridge between the areas of finance and insurance.
The mission of the FINEXUS: Center for Financial Networks and Sustainability is to address fundamental research and policy questions about systemic risk and sustainability, both financial and environmental, from the innovative perspective of networks science, big data science and complexity science. The center aims at generating highest-impact research both in terms of publications records and policy uptake, promoting outstanding doctoral education and engaging in durable dialogue with policy makers and practitioners.
The Center for Portfolio Management was established in 2015 with the objective to advance research and education in portfolio management. The center is part of the Department of Banking and Finance and supported by third-party funds.
The Center for Responsibility in Finance (CRF) was founded in 2011 to advance responsible finance and management in research, applied settings and education. Combining expertise from finance, business, psychology and the practice, the center is devoted to independent, high-ranking, inter- and transdisciplinary research.
The Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth is an academic research and teaching institution at the Department of Banking and Finance at the University of Zurich. CSP is unique in its position at the intersection of research and training, bridging scientists, wealth owners, and investment professionals in order to generate knowledge and to mobilize capital toward impact.
The Center for Urban & Real Estate Management (CUREM) is dedicated to real estate education and research.
The aim of the Zurich Center for Computational Financial Economics (ZCCFE) is to promote the exchange and development of computational research tools as well as fostering a world-wide community in an emerging area of science.
DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATICS
The three main research topics at the Department of Informatics are Human-Centered Informatics, Computing and Economics, and Big Data Analytics for Economics and Science. The department also deals with all aspects of the Digitalization that concern society, the economy, and science.

FURTHER RESEARCH CENTERS
The «UZH Digital Society Initiative» (DSI) – originally founded at our Faculty – is a scientific institution supported by all faculties of the University of Zurich (UZH) and open to all members of the UZH. It aims to promote independent scientific reflection and innovation on issues relating to the digital society, to prepare UZH students to help shape the digital society, to engage in a continuous discourse with the public and to support political decision-making.
