Dies academicus 2026: Honorary doctorate for Prof. Phanish Puranam

On Friday, 8 May 2026, Phanish Puranam, a professor at INSEAD Business School in Singapore, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics as part of the Dies academicus celebrations.

The Department for Business Administration nominated Puranam for his foundational work at the intersection of organization design and competitive advantage. His research reveals groundbreaking insights into coordination mechanisms in organizations, and his recent work has also shed light on novel organizational forms such as algorithmic organizations and the understanding of organizations in the digital age.

Puranam holds the Roland Berger Chair in Strategy and Organization Design at INSEAD. His research in organizational science focuses on how organizations work – and how they can be designed more effectively. His current work examines in particular how artificial intelligence technologies are transforming the way we organize.

He received his PhD from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. He subsequently joined the faculty of London Business School, where he remained until 2012, serving as School Chair Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship and Co-Director of the Aditya Birla India Centre. He also served as Academic Director of the PhD programs at both London Business School and INSEAD. Visiting and honorary appointments have taken him to institutions including Northwestern University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Oxford, the Indian School of Business, IIM Ahmedabad, Stanford University and Imperial College London.
