You are warmly invited to the inaugural lecture of PD Dr. Martin Grossmann:
Dynamic Contests and Outside Options
Patent races, political elections, promotional competitions, sports competitions and wars are examples of contests. Martin Grossmann discusses in his inaugural lecture to what extent outside options change the participation of potential competitors in contests. It is taken into account that the value of the outside option is typically different between contestants. Outside options have an influence on the participants' quality, but also on their incentives in the contest. He also discusses the dynamic effect of liquidity constraints on the development of contestants' strength in contests.
Martin Grossmann is a senior researcher at the Chair for Services & Operations Management at the University of Zurich. He studied Economics and wrote his doctoral thesis and habilitation on topics in contest theory, management compensation and sports economics at the University of Zurich. Martin Grossmann is also affiliated to the School of Business at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts where he is a lecturer and the Head of the Group «Mathematics and Statistics». As a post doc, he was a visiting scholar at the Northwestern University and Oxford University in 2011/12. Between 2008 and 2009, he worked in the private sector as a consultant (financial services).
